Helicopter pilot killed in crash was Lord-lieutenant for North Yorkshire
The Lord-lieutenant for North Yorkshire is believed to have died after a helicopter he was piloting crashed into a field.
The aircraft crashed near Aldborough, 16 miles north-west of York, at 1.23pm on Wednesday, North Yorkshire Police said. Although formal identification is yet to take place, police believe the pilot and sole occupant was Barry Dodd CBE.
Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the fatal crash.
In a statement yesterday, Frances Dodd, Mr Dodd’s widow, said: “Barry was intelligent, compassionate and visionary. He enjoyed great business success but just as important to him was his devotion to public service and helping others.
“More than anything, however, he was a loving family man and I will miss him enormously.”
