Listen up: The Radio 1 Breakfast Show needs us
There was a sweet little millennial moment on social media the other day. “People are shocked that Nick Grimshaw has been on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show for SIX YEARS,” squealed one post in a thread that went viral as it was announced the DJ was quitting his role.
“I feel so old!” said a colleague, who is 25. I let out a hollow laugh. The last time I remember listening to the Radio 1 Breakfast Show was back in the Nineties, when Chris Evans was at the helm. That was just yesterday, wasn’t it? I feel sad that this rite-of-passage show is suffering in the ratings. It’s almost as if young people don’t listen to the radio anymore.
When I was a kid, the done thing was to annoy whoever was doing the school run by switching the car radio from the Today programme to Steve Wright. The look of frustration on Mum and Dad’s faces was the highlight of otherwise tedious mornings. For the sake of tradition – and to keep the Radio 1 Breakfast Show alive for future generations – should we all now switch back?
