Man dies of heart attack during triathlon

♦ A competitor collapsed and died from a heart attack during a triathlon called “Sleep When You’re Dead”.

Police confirmed that a 43-year-old man died suddenly after taking part in the triathlon, which is held in South Wales. He is believed to have suffered a heart attack at the event on Barry Island.

South Wales Police were called to Whitmore Beach just before 7.30am yesterday. CPR was carried out by staff from the ambulance service, lifeguards and Coastguard, Wales Online reported. However, the man was declared dead shortly afterwards. An investigat­ion is under way. The event described the activities as a 750m (half-mile) swim around Whitmore Bay, followed by a rolling 20km (12-mile) bike course and a 5km (three-mile) run. The event stated: “With only two climbs this promises to be a fast course suitable for all!”
