Crowning glory

SIR – Reading your leading article (June 2) on the 1953 coronation, I remembered my father telling me about his father, who owned a music and equipment shop in Henley-onthames, rigging up a television so that the local squire and others could watch the coronation of George VI on May 12 1937. Apparently he had to fix an aerial to a flagpole on the estate.

Fortunatel­y the whole process was a complete success and did wonders for sales in my grandfathe­r’s shop.
