Big Fish (2003) AMC, 4.40PM ★★★

 Tim Burton steps out of the realm of the macabre to make this quirky, fun family film. Ewan Mcgregor and Albert Finney play the young and old versions of Edward Bloom – a man who has spent his life telling wild tales of giants and witches. As Bloom lies on his deathbed, his now-adult son (Billy Crudup) attempts to unpick the shaggy dog stories and discover who his father really is. A surreal slice of Southern Gothic.

Kill Bill: Vol 1 (2003) 5STAR, 10.00PM ★★★★

 Reuniting Quentin Tarantino and actress Uma Thurman, who teamed up so modishly for Pulp Fiction, the first volume of Kill Bill (the second half came out six months later) is one of the director’s best films. Thurman plays a high-kicking assassin seeking bloody vengeance on her old boss, Bill (David Carradine), and his team of trained killers. By turns daft and violent, the movie is a visual knockout. Vol 2 is on Thursday at 11pm.

Mother! (2017) SKY CINEMA PREMIERE, 11.30PM ★★★★★

 Jennifer Lawrence is exceptional in this polarising film by director Darren Aronofsky (Black Swan). It is a psychological horror set inside an introvert’s worst nightmare: a young housewife (Lawrence) and her writer husband (Javier Bardem) find their relationship is tested when an increasing number of deranged, uninvited guests (including Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer) arrive at their once-tranquil rural home.
