Woman at the top
SIR – I was interested to read (report, May 30) that the BBC is producing a series about the 19th-century landowner Anne Lister.
While many accounts focus on her life as a lesbian and her coded diaries, it is to be hoped that the series will reflect her mountaineering adventures in the Pyrenees.
As well as being the first woman to make an ascent of Monte Perdido, the third highest summit in the Pyrenees, she was also noted for her pioneering ascent of the Vignemale, the highest summit in the French Pyrenees, in 1838. Her ascent of the Vignemale is commemorated by the name of a col high up on the mountain – The Col Lady Lister.
