President to open the door for Kim if meeting goes well
DONALD TRUMP said he would invite Kim Jong-un to the White House if their summit in Singapore on June 12 was successful.
Mr Trump said: “Certainly, if it goes well. And I think it would be well received, I think he would look at it very favourably. So that could happen.”
Discussing what would happen if the meeting in Singapore did not go well, Mr Trump replied: “I am totally prepared to walk away. I hope it won’t be necessary to walk.” The president said the summit would be “more than a photo-op”, and the outcome would depend on the North Koreans’ “attitude”.
Speaking at the White House alongside Shinzo Abe, the Japanese prime minister, he said: “It’s about the attitude. It’s about willingness to get things done. So this isn’t a question of preparation, it’s a question of whether or not people want it to happen, and we’ll know that very quickly.”
Mr Trump said if North Korea did not denuclearise, that would “not be acceptable” and he could not remove any sanctions until it did.
