Cash to the rescue
SIR – Given the events of the last few weeks, it is imperative that we do not become a cashless society.
The experiences of TSB and Visa users – along with other previous incidents – have shown the pitfalls of relying entirely on electronic banking, rather than using cash. Millions were affected by the recent problems, and some are still trying to recover losses.
With cash it is easy to conduct transactions in shops, restaurants and elsewhere. With a credit/debit card, you can find it impossible to pay your bill – unless you have cash too.
We must resist these ill-considered pressures to get rid of cash. Michael Perry
