Village digs trench to deter travellers

♦over 30 residents who were fed up with travellers camping on their village green have dug a 200ft-long trench to keep them off the land.

Villagers in Theale, Berkshire, spent five hours digging the ditch this week following an appeal on social media.

The soil extracted from the hole has been piled up on the field-side of the trench to act as a barrier to trespassers.

One woman, who did not want to be named, said: “People had just reached the end of their tether ... We had to do something to protect our land.”

Councillors have confirmed no action will be taken to fill in the trench.
