Iraqi migrant suspected of killing German girl, 14

- By Justin Huggler

THE suspected rape and murder of a 14-year-old German girl by a rejected asylum seeker who escaped to his native Iraq has renewed pressure on Angela Merkel over her migrant policy.

Ali Bashar, 20, an Iraqi Kurd, was arrested in Iraq yesterday after German police named him as the prime suspect in the killing of Susanna Feldman.

Germany requested his extradition as Mrs Merkel’s government faced questions over why the rejected asylum seeker remained at liberty despite being linked to a string of violent incidents, including an earlier suspected rape. Authorities also face scrutiny over how Bashar was able to flee undetected to Iraq.

The victim’s body was found near railway lines in a wood on the outskirts of Wiesbaden, Hesse, on Wednesday. A protest march was held in her home city yesterday, as the nationalist Alternative for Germany party (AFD) called for the government to resign.
