A plan for a new airport to revitalise the North

-

SIR – I read with interest Paul Blundell’s letter (June 7) on proposals for a new airport near Rugby. However, I propose a slightly different location: between Coventry and Birmingham, just to the south-east of the M42-M6 junction.

This area is suitable for construction, is sparsely populated and would result in very little noise pollution. The location is at the heart of the Midlands with excellent road access to all parts of the country. It would also allow high-speed rail connections with London and Manchester.

Such an airport would bring the added benefits of lifting the economies of the North and Midlands, as well as justifying the huge investment in HS2. David Gem

SIR – Now that a third Heathrow runway has been backed by the Government, there is a scheme available for sound proofing houses under the flight paths with double glazing.

This is a welcome gesture, but will the double glazing prevent the signal on my digital television from freezing every 90 seconds as a plane passes overhead? Surely I am not the only one who encounters this. It is far more annoying than the aircraft noise. Paul Walker

SIR – I would like to assume that all those who are protesting against plans to expand Heathrow make it a point of principle never to fly on a plane themselves.

However, I expect that they would chiefly prefer to have continual cheap flights whenever they want them, without giving any thought about the infrastructure necessary to provide such a service. Andy Tuke
