Who says you can’t wear a mini playsuit in your 40s?

-

Is Kate Moss too old to be wearing mini playsuits? That’s the question some tabloids have been asking this week, when the supermodel had the temerity to leave the house in an item of clothing that wasn’t a hessian sack. Moss is 44, and obviously at this age she should know better than to show her knees; women over the age of 30 should be heard but not seen (Have I got that right? Or is it “women over the age of 30 should not be heard or seen”? I’m approaching the monstrous age of 38, so I’ve started to forget such things).

Of course, one might argue that it’s perfectly acceptable to judge a clothes horse by her clothes. But I don’t know why we are so bothered by what famous women choose to wear. All those ticks and crosses after awards ceremonies; all that tearing apart of what some actress has been zipped into, as if we’re all sitting there in our armchairs looking like Gisele.

The other day I bought a dress from Topshop that I was very pleased with, on account of the fact that it was Topshop and I didn’t think I fitted their frocks. “That’s not a princess dress,” said my daughter. “I don’t like it, mummy.” To which I replied: “Well that’s OK, because you don’t have to wear it.”

Each to their own, I say. Each to their own – and if that includes a thigh-skimming playsuit, then so be it.
