Young man conquers the Old Man for charity

- By Helena Horton

AN EIGHT-YEAR-OLD boy has become the youngest person to scale the Old Man of Hoy, one of the UK’S largest sea stacks.

Edward Mills climbed the 450ft stack, off the Orkney coast, to raise more than £11,000 for Climbers Against Cancer, a charity, on Friday.

The Old Man was first climbed by Sir Chris Bonington in 1966. Edward was inspired to climb it by Bekki Christian, his mother, who has terminal breast cancer.

He described the ascent as “quite scary”. Nathan Mills, his father, said: “He is delighted. He said it was the hardest thing he has ever done. He was anxious but overcame it to make it all the way.”
