Catching the elusive pear just when it’s ripe

-

SIR – In my experience a pear is perfectly ready for eating within a 10-minute window.

Any time before and it is too hard, and any time after, it is too soft and mushy.

It would be useful if supermarkets could provide a label describing the “best between” time and date.

John Rowlands

Harpenden, Hertfordshire SIR – There will be no pea-shelling for me this summer (“Forbidden fruit”, Court and Social page, June 8).

All my plants have been demolished by slugs this week. When I do manage to pick peas, I eat them raw straight from the pod – no pea grading for me.
