Flintoff mentor’s wife stole £22,000 from cricket league
The wife of Andrew Flintoff ’s mentor was caught stealing £22,000 from cricket league funds when cheques for balls bounced, a court heard.
Ann Gilfoyle, 54, abused her role as joint treasurer to steal from the Lancashirebased Northern Premier Cricket League after spiralling into debt following the death of her parents and her husband Jim Kenyon – described by Flintoff as his mentor – Preston Crown Court heard.
Gilfoyle was suspended after an investigation uncovered “irregularities”. Then, in October 2015, officials ordered an investigation after they were unable to pay a £2,500 bill for a presentation dinner.
It also emerged league cheques had bounced for payments on cricket balls and other equipment.
Gilfoyle, who admitted theft, has since repaid £9,000 but must pay back the rest by July 27 or face a year in jail. She was also ordered to complete 200 hours’ unpaid work.
