Royal wedding cellist wins Classic Brit award

Sheku Kanneh-mason, the teenage cellist who impressed audiences with his performanc­e at the wedding of the new Duke and Duchess of Sussex, last night won male artist of the year at the 2018 Classic Brit Awards.

The 19-year-old paid tribute to his parents as he accepted his award, saying they “inspire me every day”.

Kanneh-mason, who performed Schubert’s Ave Maria, Fauré’s Après un rêve and Maria Theresia von Paradis’s Sicilienne at the wedding last month, said the opportunit­y to play in front of the world changed his life. As a result of his exposure, his album is the bestsellin­g classical album of the year.
