Storm Hector is on its way, warn forecasters

- By Helena Horton

LIFE-THREATENING gales are due this week as Storm Hector descends on the UK, the Met Office has warned.

Yellow warnings have been issued across Scotland, the North of England and Northern Ireland, as high winds sweep in from the Atlantic following weeks of sunshine and warmth.

The storm could disrupt royal proceedings, with the Queen and the Duchess of Sussex due to have their first official engagement together today as they open the Mersey Gateway Bridge in Widnes, Cheshire, where there could be strong gusts.

The Met Office said: “The strongest winds will reach the west coast early tomorrow. Westerly winds are likely to gust between 50 and 60mph in many areas and possibly 70mph in exposed locations. A spell of heavy rain will accompany the wind, with most rain falling in western Scotland.”

Sophie Yeomans, a Met Office forecaster, said: “With any outdoor events planned, it may be something people are unprepared for when compared to the weather we have had recently.”

Travel disruption is expected, and road, rail, air and ferry services could be affected. It is possible some buildings may be damaged, with a chance of power loss. The strongest winds are expected in Argyll, near Oban.

The Met Office said sunny weather would return soon.
