Black Union president

SIR – In your report (“Oxbridge diversity failures are ‘staggering’”, June 6) you describe the universiti­es minister, Sam Gyimah, as the first black president of the Oxford Union, having been elected in 1997.

In fact Roy Dickson of Exeter College, a black American, was elected President for Trinity term in 1956 – two decades before Mr Gyimah was born. I was a member of the Union standing committee at the time. Patrick Chambers
