Grenfell precedent

SIR – The inquiry into the Grenfell Tower fire might study the Cullen inquiry into the fire that destroyed Piper Alpha, an oil platform, 120 miles off Scotland, in 1988. There were 167 lives lost; only 61 survived.

Official advice to the Piper Alpha workforce in the event of fire was to assemble in the fireproofed living quarters and await rescue. They perished. The survivors were those who managed to jump into the sea, rescued by small boats darting in and pulling exhausted men from the water.

SIR – Serious consideration should be given to renaming Latimer Road Underground station “Grenfell”. This would be a long-term reminder for Londoners and visitors of the tragedy that devastated the block which towers over Latimer Road station.

The former Grenfell Tower residents should be consulted on this.
