Safe streets

SIR – I take Jose Mcvicar’s point about not wearing nice jewellery in certain areas or using a mobile phone while walking (Letters, June 12).

Yet you should be able to do these things without fear of being attacked. The best way to achieve this is to have harsh punishments for wrongdoers and more police on the streets, preferably armed. David Greenhill
