69m people ‘forcibly displaced’ last year

The UN refugee agency has reported that nearly 69 million people who have fled war, violence and persecution were forcibly displaced last year, a record for the fifth straight year.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees said the figures debunk the perception among some that a refugee crisis has affected more developed countries in the “Global North”.

It said 85 per cent of refugees were in developing countries.
