Grizzly fate for bear statue that driver thought was real

-

A GRIZZLY bear sculpture must be removed from a Welsh roadside after a motorist thought it was real and careered off the road into a signpost.

But the people of Britain’s smallest town, Llanwrtyd Wells, population 850, are fighting the order of the Welsh Assembly to remove the 10ft wooden statue. Peter James, a town councillor, said: “He has been an iconic gateway of the town for 15 years. We pleaded with the Welsh government to listen.”

A resident said the woman crashed as she feared the bear was about to attack. “Apparently she had been on holiday in Canada, or was from Canada so was used to seeing bears,” the man said.

The bear is believed to have originally put at the roadside by the former Cambrian Woollen Mill on the site.

A spokesman for the Welsh Assembly said the bear was a distraction for drivers.
