Driver who killed her sister in crash is spared prison

-

♦ A young woman who killed her 16-year-old sister in a car crash has been spared jail after her parents told a judge she had been punished enough.

Meliha Kaya, 22, lost control of her speeding car late at night on Chigwell Road, East London, in February 2016, crashed into a BMW, went over a wall and hit a tree. Her sister Elif died at the scene and another passenger, Ayla Osman, 24, was badly injured.

Kaya pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to causing death by dangerous driving. After her family begged for leniency, Judge Wendy Joseph QC said: “No sentence I can impose can punish her as much as this.” She was given a two-year suspended jail term.
