Scientists in hospital after chemical spill

Five scientists were airlifted to hospital yesterday after a chemical spill at an Oxford University research laboratory.

The accident at the Chemical Research Laboratory in Mansfield Road caused breathing difficulti­es for those affected.

South Central Ambulance Service’s hazardous material handling team attended and the scientists were taken to John Radcliffe Hospital for tests and treatment.

A spokesman for Oxfordshir­e Fire and Rescue Service said: “Fire service crews and in-house research specialist staff made the scene safe.” It is not known what the spilt compound was.
