C4 calls for clearer rules on TV junk food ad ban

-

An advertising ban on junk food would mean olive oil and chutney could not be advertised during Countdown, the Channel 4 chief executive told MPS.

Alex Mahon told the digital, culture, media and sport select committee that clear legislation was needed over what products would be limited in any ban over efforts to tackle child obesity.

Food products high in fat, salt or sugar could be limited from airing on TV before the watershed as part of the Government’s bid to tackle the issue. Ms Mahon said: “There are a number of things that are sort of covered by a blanket ban, which perhaps need to be thought through to make sure there are no unintended consequences.”
