Gavin Williamson, the Defence Secretary, has been criticised for his “unintelligent” approach to securing a bigger defence budget as colleagues suggested his public spat with the Prime Minister would harm the Armed Forces. Mr Williamson is expected to ask Theresa May to announce an increase in defence spending in time for a Nato summit on July 11. He is reported to have boasted that he will “break” the Prime Minister if she refuses, but a fellow minister said Mr Williamson, who joined reservists for a No 10 breakfast to mark Reserves Day, was using the “wrong approach”.
