Whale saved after surfacing two miles up a Norfolk river

-

 A whale has been guided back to sea by rescuers after swimming up a river in Norfolk.

The creature, believed to be a young fin whale, was sighted more than two miles up the Great Ouse in King’s Lynn yesterday morning.

A crowd of people gathered on the riverbank as it surfaced every few minutes, revealing what appeared to be fresh wounds on its back.

As the tide turned, the giant cetacean was carried back downstream.

Captain Patrick Jary, King’s Lynn’s harbour master, said a jet boat was used to herd it towards the docks. Some leisure craft then joined in the operation to guide the whale back to open waters.
