Morrissey gigs cancelled amid ex-fans’ protest

- By Victoria Ward

MORRISSEY has postponed all UK and European gigs scheduled for next month after former fans planned a protest against his political views.

The former Smiths frontman had been due to play at Castlefield Bowl in his home city of Manchester on July 7 and 8 and then further gigs in Portsmouth and Reading.

Promoters last night blamed “logistical problems” for the postponement but his team was said to have been “rattled” by the former fans’ plan to hold an anti-racism party that clashed with one of the Manchester concerts.

Campaigners had organised a protest party for July 8 in the city after the 59-year-old singer made comments in support of jailed English Defence League founder Tommy Robinson. In April, Morrissey also announced his support for For Britain, a far-right party created by failed Ukip leadership contestant Anne Marie Waters.

All original purchasers from official ticket outlets will have the full ticket fee refunded, including booking fee. The singer’s world tour will continue in Mexico City in November.
