TINA MOORE ‘I OUT-EARNED BOBBY’

-

The 1966 World Cup was an incredibly exciting time for the country, not least for those of us following the triumphs of our husbands and boyfriends in the England squad. While the buzz around us was some way off the fever pitch it would reach with the Beckhams three decades later, I realised after the win that football had gone mainstream. Taxi drivers would honk their horns at us, people started offering me free clothes and we could get into any top restaurant we liked. It was a thrilling part of our lives, for sure. The money, however, was nothing in comparison to what it is today. When we married in 1962, I was out-earning Bobby with my secretarial work. Unlike today, it was not the dream of many girls to be a footballer’s wife. I don’t actually have a huge interest in football, though of course I am following England. The fact these young boys are doing so well is uplifting for the nation, just as it was 52 years ago – the year that football came home.
