Wimbledon 2018
BBC ONE & BBC TWO, FROM 11.00AM
The covers are off, the strawberries are piled high and Sue Barker is in situ. Wimbledon is back for a thrilling fortnight of tennis action, with the BBC bringing us every serve and volley from SW19. BBC One, BBC Two and Radio 5 Live will cover the matches each day, with up to 16 live streams in HD on digital services. For armchair fans seeking hyper-realism, the BBC iplayer will have all Centre Court matches available in Ultra HD.
The BBC’S main coverage remains in the safe hands of Barker, who is aided by John Mcenroe, Martina Navratilova and Billie Jean King. Highlights of each day’s play come courtesy of Clare Balding on Today at Wimbledon (BBC Two, 8.30pm), while Radio 5 live has daily coverage as well as John Mcenroe’s 6-love-6 phone-in.
This is also Barry Davies’s final stint as a commentator at SW19. His contribution to broadcasting is honoured in the documentary Barry Davies: The Man, The Voice, The Legend, which is on BBC One on Wednesday. With big tournaments so often sold to the highest bidder or shared out among networks, it’s pleasing that this quintessentially British sporting occasion remains with our public service broadcaster.
