Moorland firefighti­ng

SIR – Watching brave fire crews trying to put out the moorland fires, I wonder why we don’t seem to have access to the Canadair firefighti­ng aircraft commonly used in southern France.

These amphibious planes scoop up large volumes of water from nearby lakes and dump them on to fires very like those in the north of England. The fires are quickly extinguish­ed.
