Avoid falling by taking up Nordic walking
♦ Nordic walking should be taken up by older people to reduce the risk of them falling over.
Exercises for balance and strength are linked with significant health benefits, as they help strengthen muscles and bones, according to a review of evidence commissioned by Public Health England (PHE) and the Centre for Ageing Better.
Poor muscle strength increases the risk of a fall by 76 per cent in older people, while those who have already had a fall are three times more likely to do so again, the review found. It says adults should give equal weighting to aerobic and strengthening activities to improve well-being as they age.
Nordic walking – which involves propelling the body forward using poles – is among the activities found to have the most benefit for muscle and bone strengthening. Officials also recommend dance and tennis.
Dr Zoe Williams of PHE said: “Strength and balance activities… come with a range of health benefits… it’s never too late to start.”
