Mayor shot dead during ambush in Philippines

Motorcycle-borne gunmen yesterday assassinated a mayor in the Philippines, the second such killing of an official in two days, police said.

Ferdinand Bote, 57, of the town of General Tinio, Nueva Ecija, became the 12th elected official to be killed since President Rodrigo Duterte unleashed an anti-narcotics campaign after coming to power two years ago, although Mr Bote was not linked to the trade. He and his driver were leaving a government office in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija, when the gunmen struck.
