SIR – Even stores that still accept cash are vulnerable to a possible technologi­cal failure (“IT meltdowns raise doubts over switch to cashless society”, Business, July 3).

When stores are faced with a power cut they can’t use bar code scanners, and therefore are unable to ascertain the correct price of items. Dr Derrick Lander
