SIR – Jane Shilling writes (Comment, July 2) on the resurgence of the waistcoat.

It is interestin­g to note that in 1666 Charles II was reported to have adopted the “Eastern fashion of vest”. I have always found it hilarious that vest is the North American term for waistcoat. Had England manager Gareth Southgate actually appeared in his vest, I doubt he would have made the same impression. Joan E Humphrey

Etched in my memory is the occasion when, at a senior management meeting, I stretched back in my chair – only to see a waistcoat button free itself, fly across the table and land in a colleague’s teacup. James Logan
