Vested interest
SIR – Jane Shilling writes (Comment, July 2) on the resurgence of the waistcoat.
It is interesting to note that in 1666 Charles II was reported to have adopted the “Eastern fashion of vest”. I have always found it hilarious that vest is the North American term for waistcoat. Had England manager Gareth Southgate actually appeared in his vest, I doubt he would have made the same impression. Joan E Humphrey

SIR – During my working life I loved wearing my snug waistcoats.
Etched in my memory is the occasion when, at a senior management meeting, I stretched back in my chair – only to see a waistcoat button free itself, fly across the table and land in a colleague’s teacup. James Logan
