1966 Politics

Harold Wilson won a general election in 1966 to increase Labour’s majority. Europe was an issue and the following year Wilson applied to join the European Economic Community (EEC) to become part of the common market but his bid was vetoed.

Weather

On June 23, a heatwave was declared in one of the top five warmest Junes ever recorded. Record-breaking temperatures led to wildfires with large blazes on Saddleworth Moor in Greater Manchester and Winter Hill in Lancashire. Temperatures reached 32.6 °C at Porthmadog, Gwynedd on June 26.
