Mike Denness’s cricket medals stolen in home raid
MEDALS awarded to former England Ashes captain Mike Denness have been stolen from the person who now owns them, police have revealed.
Three county cricket winners’ medals awarded to Denness, the only Scottish-born cricketer to have captained the England team, were taken from a home in Brentwood, Essex, on June 26. Jewellery and cash was also taken.
Investigating officer PC Paul Burnett, said: “Not only has the victim had to deal with a break-in, but the theft of these medals, which have invaluable sentimental worth.”
Denness played 28 tests and 12 ODIS for England, as well as 501 first-class matches for Kent and Essex, spanning 18 years. He retired from cricket in 1980 and died in 2013.
The owner of Denness’s medals is appealing to the public to help find them. The anonymous victim said: “These medals represented the achievements of someone special, and meant a great deal to me and the person they belonged to. If you have information that could help get these medals returned to me, please come forward.”
