Junior doctors say their job leaves no time for training

-

♦ Junior doctors are failing to improve their skills because pressure in NHS hospitals leaves little time for training, health chiefs have warned.

A new report by the General Medical Council voices “major concerns” about young doctors’ ability to learn. One in three doctors who act as trainers said they struggle to devote any time to mentoring young medics.

The Uk-wide poll of more than 70,000 doctors also found around a third of junior doctors are exhausted before they start work, with four in 10 describing their workload as heavy.

Charlie Massey, chief executive of the GMC, said: “Doctors are struggling to find time for essential training. Training must be protected and it must be safe, and employers need to address this urgently.”
