When it comes to reality TV, the lips don’t lie
Two years ago, I headed down to the gilded gated community in Calabasas, LA, where Keeping Up with the Kardashians is filmed, to interview the youngest of the litter, Kylie Jenner. People like to assure you that, beneath the ditsy facades, those reality TV show stars are “shrewd businesswomen” with unique “entrepreneurial skills”, and yet, curiously, when you meet them, all you see is the ditz – and the lips.
In fact, you can chart the rise of the 20-year-old (along with most reality stars) from the size of her lips, which went from normal to pneumatic in puberty in the way that lips, well, don’t tend to, earning her 100million Instagram followers and a position on the Forbes Celebrity 100 list. This makes Jenner’s Instagram announcement yesterday that she “got rid of all my filler” still more surprising. Obviously, she looks better without that Marge Simpson overhang, and she has probably single-handedly stopped hundreds of thousands of pre-teen girls from desecrating their faces, but what’s going to happen to her career?
