Ashley Young

Andy Braithwaite, his PE teacher at John Henry Newman School

-

Ashley was 11 when I first taught him. He was fairly quiet and slightly built. He was technically the best in the year group but, due to his smaller physique, in matches he did not stand out. This changed over the five years he played in school fixtures and by 16 he was outstanding. His attitude in PE lessons was excellent. He was head and shoulders above most boys but worked hard and would help weaker pupils. His commitment was absolute. Many a time his mum would be waiting after a school game to drive him the 40 minutes to Watford training. I have never come across any other academy player who has been so passionate about playing for his school team.
