- Crime Correspondent By Martin Evans

AN ELDERLY woman who was beaten and left to die in her home may have offered her killer a glass of water in the heatwave, it has emerged.

Joyce Burgess, 84, who was described as a “lovely, sweet and kind lady”, was the victim of a violent burglary less than an hour after England’s World Cup win over Sweden on Saturday.

She was rushed to hospital with severe injuries from her detached house in Woking, Surrey, but died yesterday. One line of inquiry being pursued by the police is that her attacker could have been posing as a workman and got into her home by asking for a glass of water as temperatures soared.

Police said: “At around 5.30pm on Loop Road, a man … stole her handbag and attacked her. The man left the property following the incident and got into a white vehicle.”

Her attacker is described as white, slim and around 5ft 8 to 6ft tall with light brown hair in a curtains-style.
