Check social media – it can be inspiring

-

Before last year’s European Championship, the England Women’s team held a vote to decide our policy towards social media during the tournament.

I argued we should use it whenever we wanted, others wanted a blanket ban. My side won the vote but it was very close. That shows how some believe social media can be a distraction, but I have never seen a team use it to their advantage in a tournament in the way this England side have.

They are revelling in their achievements and that has been reflected in their posts, which have been upbeat, funny and reflect a team enjoying the ride.

“It’s coming home” has almost become a national movement and whatever happens today, the team will return having changed the culture of English football – and social media has played a key role in that. It has helped make the players aware of the impact their performances are having and helped them tap in to the near-hysteria at home.

So I hope the players do spend some time watching the memes, looking at the videos and reading their good-luck messages. If it gives them even a tiny boost then it could tip the balance and ensure this incredible journey will end on Sunday in the World Cup final.
