Test of faith ‘RE classes should be mandatory’

Parents should not be allowed to exclude their children from Religious Education classes, says Charles Clarke, the former education secretary. In a new policy pamphlet, he calls for RE to be treated as a “normal academic subject”, and suggests it should be renamed “Religion, Belief and Values” to recognise the fact that most English people now say they have no religion.
