You may have won the trophy, Novak, but you lost your fans

-

What a treat! A friend invited me to join her at Wimbledon on Saturday for the ladies’ final. While the action on court was quite interesting, for some reason my binoculars found themselves swinging upwards to the Royal Box. Duchesses Kate and Meghan had all eyes upon them. Kate has never looked better. Still blooming after the birth of Louis, she was relaxed and coolly dressed for the boiling weather in a polka dot dress. Despite the heat, Meghan made a style statement of a long-sleeved stripy shirt and high-waisted cream trousers.

Before the ladies’ match, as luck would have it, we caught the end of the Nadal-djokovic semi-final. It was so searingly good, and so well matched, that it made Sunday’s perfunctory final look like a primary-school Egg and Spoon race.

The crowd was firmly behind Nadal who, even when he is unleashing ferocious backhands down the line, has a sweetness about him. The Serb, however, behaved unpleasantly after his narrow victory. Raising his arms in triumph, he gestured to the crowd to increase our applause in a defiant, “See, you may prefer Rafa, but he lost so pay tribute to me” manner.

All I can say is the Wimbledon champion deserves his nickname: Novichok.
