RADIO 4, 9.00AM

Polish sculptor and video artist Mirosław Bałka, whose most famous work in this country is his dark and ominous installation at Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall in 2009, is the subject of this edition of Behind The Scenes. He gives Frances Morris, Director of Tate Modern, a tour of his studio in Otwock, near Warsaw. Morris goes in search of the alchemy of Balka’s work, which can transform discarded objects such as old wood, used soap and pine needles into resonant works that convey poignant stories.
