Erdogan’s power to grow as emergency rule ends
A two-year state of emergency imposed after Turkey’s failed 2016 coup will end today, but Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s opponents say his new executive presidency and a draft anti-terrorism law give him sweeping powers with which to stifle dissent.
Mr Erdogan did promise to lift the state of emergency if he was re-elected, but added that the government would also introduce new counter-terrorism legislation and take tough action against any threat to Turkey’s security.
