Tough talk Main points of objection

Google spends millions developing the Android system that the majority of smartphones run on, but gives it away to manufacturers for free.

It ties them to strict “exclusivity agreements” that determine what apps they are able to install on their phones.

If smartphone makers want their handsets to include the Google Play Store, they must also pre-install a bundle of other apps, including Google’s search engine.

Google defends the deals, saying they ensure people who buy Android phones enjoy a reliable experience, keep prices down and allow firms to compete with Apple. But the European Commission calls the agreements a breach of competition law.

By ensuring its search engine is installed on almost every Android phone, the commission says it exploits Android’s market share of nearly 80pc to squeeze out rivals.

Google has now been ordered to break these agreements within 90 days. The company has said it will appeal against the decision.
