Leader: Bobby Cole Winner: Tom Watson

South African Bobby Cole took a slender one-shot lead over Australia’s Jack Newton into the final round and was three to the good of eventual winner Tom Watson (below). By the end, the American was tied with Newton, with Coles a further shot back, and heading for a what proved to be the final 18-hole play-off at the Open. Watson won by a hole.
