Old people driving
SIR – Angela Epstein (Comment, July 18) writes as if almost all elderly drivers should be taken off the road.
I am 77, and last winter I was delighted to have the opportunity to take part in an older drivers’ refresher course. The afternoon part of the course entailed having one’s driving assessed. As I was the only participant driving an automatic car, my session was longer than most.
During those one and a half hours I made just one mistake.
I have restricted myself to journeys of no more than 120 miles in one day and try not to get behind the wheel when tired. I have high driving standards, and am alert to those who drive too close to the vehicle or display other hazardous habits.
However, I hope that if the time ever comes when I should be “banned from driving”, someone will have the courage to tell me. Sally A Williams
