Say what you like about millennials, they put on a wedding to remember

-

Millennials have been getting a tough time of it recently, but I’ve just come back from a millennial wedding, and I have to say they have beautifully reinvented the whole shebang.

The essential elements were all there, but the ethos was entirely different. Back in my day, guests were there as polite spectators to a family occasion.

The mother of the bride would invariably sequester the invitation list (the main perk of her husband footing the bill) in order to reconnect with obscure second cousins and show off to the neighbours. But these days, young people very often fund the day themselves, so they get to do it their own way. And what an empathetic bunch they are.

First off, the wedding was on a Wednesday; less convenient for some, but far more affordable. I was impressed.

Then when we arrived at the sweltering church, guests were each handed a sweet little Chinese fan to cool ourselves in the heat. Lovely.

Later on, we boarded a coach to take us to the reception, where we were plied with cold drinks and snacks. Nice touch. Once at the castle (thank

Wednesday it was available…), there was the usual fizz, albeit in unusually munificent quantity. Oh, go on then.

As the first few ladies headed to the Ladies, they returned shrieking with shock and awe; they’d discovered the basket that the bride had laid on.

What’s this? Inside said basket was everything a female guest could possibly need at a wedding: deodorant, cleansing wipes, pads, sticking plasters, safety pins, analgesics and needle and thread. Wow.

It was hard to feel more loved… until the footwear fairy arrived. But there she was, carrying a basket bearing flip-flops in every size, and just at the point our smart heels were starting to pinch. OMG.

What an astonishingly thoughtful occasion. The day was supposed to be all about them, but the attentive bride and groom had made so much of it all about us. I wish them a lifetime of happiness together.
